Passing the Everglades Test

“The Everglades is a test.  If we pass, we get to keep the planet.” – Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

After an eight-year struggle that began in 1992, we passed another test in the greater Everglades, although Ms. Douglas died before the final grade was rendered.  Decisions about redeveloping the former Homestead Air Force Base had been made that could have dealt a deadly blow to the Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park, but perseverance and dedication of steadfast environmentalists prevailed.

Everglades Betrayal - The Issue that Defeated Al Gore describes the eight-year struggle and the unbelievable twists and turns that occurred throughout the process.  In the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Andrew, overcoming misguided land use planning decisions took courage and guts to push against sympathetic governments at all levels, a revered Latin-American mayor, and the powerful Latin American Builders Association.  Yet, in the end, it was the country’s love affair with the greater Everglades ecosystem that turned the situation around.

Everglades Betrayal is a worthwhile story for anyone interested in protecting our special natural resources, learning about powerful tools to further these efforts, experiencing the personalities of south Florida, and gaining insight into Al Gore’s ill-fated strategy that cost him the 2000 presidential election.  Everglades Betrayal reveals the Everglades’ compelling presence that cannot be overlooked in land use planning decisions.

We will not forget the Everglades, Ms. Douglas.
