It is wonderful that one of the conservation icons of the last century is the female environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She and other female environmentalists, such as Rachel Carson, have had a profound impact on the planet, and we are all beneficiaries of their efforts. There are other female environmentalists with less name recognition who have made positive strides in the mission to preserve our natural resources, and there is at least one story of their efforts in Ms. Douglas’ territory.
Everglades Betrayal – The Issue that Defeated Al Gore describes the events and tireless efforts to rout a reckless proposal to redevelop the former Homestead Air Force Base into an international airport. The proposed development would have put 600 airplanes each day in the air over Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park. Environmental groups, such as the Sierra Club and National Audubon Society, joined together to stop the development. Female environmentalists also contributed to the eventual decision and include Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson; Herbert Hoover Jr. daughter Lacy Hoover; Sierra Club member Barbara Lange; President Clinton’s Council on Environmental Quality Chairwoman Katie McGinty; and EPA Administrator Carol Browner, to name a few. Their efforts and those of others are detailed in the fascinating pages of Everglades Betrayal that culminates with the unbelievable results of the 2000 presidential election.
Anyone interested in protecting our environment, south Florida politics, land use planning, and contributions of female environmentalists will enjoy reading Everglades Betrayal. It reveals the power of many and, especially, that of the female environmentalists.
