The Everglades Coalition:
One-Stop for Everglades Protectors

The mosaic of habitats found within the greater Everglades ecosystem supports plant and animal life not found elsewhere on the planet.  In the Everglades ecosystem, life from the Caribbean tropics coexists with more familiar species from the temperate North America.  While nine distinct habitats have been identified, the remaining Everglades ecosystem is only a fraction of its original size stretching south from the Tamiami Trail to the Florida Keys and from Big Cypress National Preserve to Biscayne National Park.  It remains in a constant state of flux, subject to natural elements and human development pressures.

Everglades Betrayal – The Issue that Defeated Al Gore is an account of a proposed development in the middle of the Everglades ecosystem that would have destroyed the attributes that distinguish the area from others.  While geology, water quality, fire and weather are a few of the many natural factors that help shape the Everglades ecosystem, human interference has worked to undermine it over the years.  The proposal to develop an international airport in between Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park was one more injury.  Everglades Betrayal describes efforts of many concerned environmentalists who prevented further impact to the delicate Everglades ecosystem.

Because of their efforts, flocks of countless birds, over 300 species of aquatic life, 40 species of mammals, and over 50 distinct kinds of reptiles that are home in the Everglades ecosystem were spared one more assault.  Unfortunately, their efforts took many years and influenced the 2000 presidential election.  Everglades Betrayal chronicles these events and personalities, culminating in an unbelievable ending.  The greater Everglades ecosystem is worth it.
