The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of 45 local, state, and national conservation and environmental organizations dedicated to the full restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem, from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes out to Florida Bay and the Keys. The Everglades Coalition provides avenues to exchange information and receive news updates for the many groups and individuals interested in the Everglades. The Everglades Coalition annual meetings have become useful forums for discussing issues as well as exciting platforms for momentous political announcements.
Such was the case during the proposal to redevelop the Homestead Air Force Base into an airport. Everglades Betrayal – The Issue that Defeated Al Gore is the written account of unbelievable events that began when Hurricane Andrew destroyed the Base in 1992. Everglades Betrayal describes the rushed environmental analysis that formed the basis for approving the land transfer to the county for its intended development of an airport. Environmental activists rallied and initiated a chain of events that led to the first exciting announcement at the Everglades Coalition meeting: the analysis would be re-done.
So began the eight-year saga to adequately analyze impacts to the greater Everglades ecosystem. Everglades Betrayal details all the twists and turns of the political maneuvering, scientific arguments, legal challenges, and the fateful 2000 presidential election results in south Florida that were outcomes of this struggle.
During the years of this story, the Everglades Coalition was the platform for announcing course changes and for bringing together brilliant minds to devise alternative uses of the Base.
