Environmentalists Today are Admired

Not too long ago, environmentalists were regarded as radical impediments to progress.  Not so today as we recognize the importance of caring for our planet earth!  Still, there are situations when environmentalists are not welcomed.  Fortunately, they unite and persevere.  One recent example that brought together numerous environmentalists is the eight-year saga to redevelop the former Homestead Air Force Base in south Florida.  Environmentalists noticed the grave errors in the scant analysis and launched one of the most complex and expensive resource preservation fights in history.

Everglades Betrayal – The Issue that Defeated Al Gore reveals the strategies and consequences of that fight.  Readers of Everglades Betrayal will find themselves deep in the tropical paradise and the infamous politics of south Florida.  Fascinating twists and turns take readers through local, state, and national processes.  Environmentalists finally realized that intervention from the White House was necessary to turn the situation around.  Unfortunately, this issue and the 2000 presidential election collided as candidates wanted to win the endorsement of the revered Cuban-American mayor that supported the airport.

Everglades Betrayal describes environmentalists’ strategies, including their pleas to Al Gore.  When the environmental impact statement was released again claiming that an airport would not harm the national parks, environmentalists erupted.  Their conservation ally in the White House had let them down at a time when he needed their support.  Even John McCain opposed the development of a commercial airport, although he may not have known it at the time.  He introduced a bill designed to curtail noisy touring flights over the Grand Canyon by requiring implementation of minimum altitudes, flight corridors, and curfews over national parks. In the end, every third party candidate in Florida earned more votes than the number that separated Al Gore from George Bush.

Did environmentalists register their discontent with Al Gore by voting for someone else?  Read Everglades Betrayal and decide for yourself how the environmentalists wielded their power in this very important battle.
